Antiques to Now - It's Only Here

Megan Kiantos

May 11, 2021

Born in Australia, New York based set designer Megan Kiantos studied for her Bachelor of Communications at RMIT University in Melbourne before relocating to the United States. After a stint in film production, Megan found an outlet in photography as a means to create alternative narratives to popular culture. This natural affinity for the arts provided the foundation to transition into set design. Injecting humor and celebration into her work with a mix of historical styles, she draws inspiration from the everyday. Her bold and colorful aesthetic has led to advertising commissions with Adidas, Coach, DKNY, Glossier, Nike & Opening Ceremony.

Q&A with Megan Kiantos

Q.

First investment piece of furniture you purchased?

A.

My Vitsoe shelving. It was the best investment I’ve ever made. I spent a long time looking for secondhand options, but they’re almost impossible to come by and I ended up buying my system new. I think the fact that no one tends to resell is testament to the quality and versatility of the design.

Q.

What are some of the podcasts you listen to and why?

A.

Recently, Grounded with Louis Theroux, 99 Percent Invisible and Desert Island Discs. Lately I’m comforted and inspired by listening to people in conversation who come from different fields, particularly outside of the creative industry. It’s refreshing to me to be introduced to new ways of thinking and perceiving the world.

Q.

What are you most excited about at this time in your life?

A.

Collaborating with new and old friends, the idea of (hopefully) being able to travel safely again in the coming year to visit family and friends I’ve missed.

Q.

How did you get started in this field?

A.

I used to work in production; first in the film industry in Australia, then in video production in New York, however I was quite unsatisfied creatively in these logistical roles. I became increasingly interested in the set design element of projects and eventually transitioned into assisting set and production designers working in photo and motion.

Q.

What are three things you can’t live without?

A.

Tea, an excessive amount of water, a healthy sleep cycle.

Q.

How would you define your work in three words?

A.

Playful, deliberate, concise.

Q.

Favorite city to recharge?

A.

Melbourne, my hometown, always grounds me in a way that nowhere else can.

Q.

Sweet or savory?

A.

Savory.

Q.

Are you a dog or cat person?

A.

I love both but more recently I’d say I’m a dog person. I want a dog really badly but my current lifestyle doesn’t allow for it.

Q.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A.

Lots of things, but for the longest time an architect.
