Q&A with Karuna Karmarkar

Q.

What are three things you can’t live without?

A.

Love, autonomy, water.

Q.

Best gift you’ve ever received?

A.

A vial of olive oil from the West Bank, from a production designer friend who, along with a peace group, has acted as protective presence for Palestinian olive farmers. I think about everything that went into producing this little vial of oil and the history and struggle behind keeping their culture alive especially now. I’m honored to have it in my house and I keep it with my perfumes and look at it every morning.

Q.

A book that everyone should read?

A.

“Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” by Caitlin Doughty

Q.

Dream project to take on?

A.

I’m late to the party as usual but would love to work on a period piece set during the Gilded Age. I just started getting into “The Alienist” and I want to rewatch “The Knick”, and start “The Gilded Age”. Recently I got to see one of my favorite painters John Singer Sargent at the Met in NYC and was completely captivated by his work. What an incredible time in history.

Q.

What is your spirit animal and why?

A.

Cat – sometimes warm, sometimes bitey. Prone to hide in plain sight.

Q.

What is one Instagram account you can’t live without?

A.

@dear_white_staffers because I’m a political junkie

Q.

What do you like to do in your free time/ outside of work?

A.

My first love was and is photography. My approach to set decoration however, is the same as to how I approach the world with my camera. The job is to tell a story within a frame. Sometimes people ask me if I would like to be a production designer, but I’d rather work on my own ideas as a photographer—- it allows me to be the Director, Production Designer, DP, Costume Designer and at times Actor all at once. When I take photographs, I prefer going through the whole process by myself without outside assistance. I also like to use practical effects as much as possible.  It creates a set of parameters and I think sometimes having limitations makes you more creative in coming up with solutions, and I appreciate that challenge.

Q.

Who is your role model and why?

A.

My Mom of course, along with a variety of ungovernable women from history: Frida Kahlo, Lee Miller and Christine Keeler amongst others.

Q.

Describe your teenage bedroom?

A.

So many posters and magazine tearsheets —- H.R. Giger, Bettie Page, the band Garbage, black velvet and neon Doors poster with Jim Morrison’s face, cut out collages of Mulder and Scully printed out from a very slow inket printer using dial up internet.

Q.

Biggest pet peeve?

A.

People who love to talk but can’t converse.
