Cherish Hale

June 8, 2021

My name is Cherish.

After receiving my degree in interior design, I decided I wanted more…it only took a moment to figure it out…what was more?  More WEIRD, CRAZY, WORLDY, UNIQUE!  I wanted a job where in one week I could design the most beautiful modern home and also the most interesting trailer in the park. Turn a restaurant into a hotel lobby…turn an upholstery shop into a boutique hotel room (both I have done in a day).

Set decorating for me is about story telling.  And I have lots of stories to tell.

Cherish received her BS in Interior Design from Philadelphia University. In her 20 years of working in film and television, Cherish has had many notable decorator positions including, Emmy nominated “Escape at Dannemora”, Golden Globe winner “The Affair” (seasons one and two), Grammy winning series “Flight of the Conchords”, Sundance winner “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” & “The Wackness”, and the recently released popular Netflix show “Halston”.

Cherish received an Emmy nomination for her work on “Escape at Dannemora” in 2019, and a nomination by the Art Directors Guild in 2010 for her work on “Flight of Conchords”.

Q&A with Cherish Hale

Q.

First investment piece of furniture you purchased?

A.

The first pieces of investment furniture I ever purchased were from a company called Dialogica. They were a Soho-based family owned and manufactured furniture company where I got my first job, straight out of college. I purchased a modern circular chair called the Oom upholstered in chestnut velvet, and a full size platform bed with an upholstered headboard. Thankfully, I received an employee discount.

Q.

What is the best thing about shopping in person?

A.

The best part about shopping in person is it’s really the only way to understand exactly what you’re getting. Shopping online or having a buyer shop for you has its benefits but it can also present many challenges. I’ve purchased Items that have shown up and are completely the wrong scale or in not so great condition.  I’ve had many a good laugh with my co-workers when an item shows up and it’s not at all what we expected. Overly exhausted midnight online shopping can at least give you the occasional chuckle.

Q.

What do you consider your career highlight?

A.

So far my career highlight would have to be my Emmy nomination for “Escape at Dannemora”. I did not get into this business for accolades, but it was lovely to tell my family that I had been recognized for all the hard work I put into it and a little validation for the time spent away from them.

Q.

Best way to relax/decompress?

A.

I love to cook.  We have a lake house that’s only slightly over an hour from the city. I love to invite friends on the weekends and cook up a storm.  When I am in the kitchen I can just forgot about all the drama/stress of the week and just chop away.

Q.

Best compliment you’ve ever received?

A.

When I was pregnant, my cousin wrote a poem to my unborn son.  The second line was “Your mom is beautiful both inside and out.”

Q.

What are three things you can’t live without?

A.

Sauvignon Blanc, pasta and my family of course.

Q.

If you were stuck on an island and can only eat one food what would it be?

A.

Lobster and hopefully I’d develop enough skills to catch some. French fries are a #2.

Q.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A.

A decorator. Every time we bought a new appliance I decorated the box including homemade wallpaper, window treatments and furniture.

Q.

Are you a dog or cat person?

A.

At the moment Dog person since we have a puppy, but I love cats too.

Q.

Biggest pet peeve?

A.

Overly inflated egos.
