Back Stage at Newel Props with Allison Lanier

November 23, 2020

I’ve worked in various roles in the entertainment industry for the past ten years, from being a Production Assistant to acting in TV shows and movies. My favorite role so far though has been as a Prop Stylist for video and photoshoots. I love scouring shops and the web for niche items that perfectly set the scene whether it’s for an editorial, film, or in a home. I’ll now be working on the flip side of that at Newel, helping set decorators and stylists fulfill their visions through the vast collection here. I have a passion for furniture, and love learning about design and how our relationship to the home has evolved throughout history. Newel is the perfect place for that with tens of thousands of square feet filled with decades of furniture and thus, life lessons and history.

Q.

What do you like to do in your free time/ outside of work?

A.

In my free time you can find me on all the auction websites searching out deals, or thrifting in Connecticut or New Jersey. I am always on the hunt for unique furniture and accessories for myself and for friends and family. If I’m not doing that, I’m riding my bike around Brooklyn, rearranging my apartment, or grabbing a bite or a drink at one of my local spots.

Q.

What are some podcasts you listen to and why?

A.

I listen to The Daily and Up First every day just to stay relatively aware of what’s going on in the world without having to constantly look at Twitter or the news. I love Design Matters and 99% Invisible, but my guilty pleasure podcast is called Who Weekly. They describe it as “the podcast that tells you everything you need to know about the celebrities you don’t.” I truly don’t know who they’re talking about half of the time, but it’s a really funny and light hearted listen.

Q.

Who is a contemporary inspiration in your field?

A.

Eny Lee Parker, Simone Bodmer Turner, and Bari Ziperstein are all making amazing ceramic sculptures, vessels, and furniture that I love. I am also really into interiors that Green River Project LLC has been doing lately. Max Lamb furniture is a constant inspiration as well… there’s too many to choose from!

Q.

What modern design trend makes you cringe?

A.

Any time I say I really can’t stand something I immediately see a space where a designer got it totally right — so I’m hesitant to answer this one! But… pastels. It may be the generation I belong to, but Millennial pastels aren’t my cup of tea.

Q.

How do you define beauty?

A.

Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. I think when it comes to art, furniture, and interiors authenticity is the key. I love an eclectic space that is wholly reflective of the occupant, even if it isn’t my style. There is so much charm and beauty in that.

Q.

What is one thing that is always in your refrigerator?

A.

Pickled jalapenos, I put them on everything.

Q.

Worst fad you participated in?

A.

Too many to count, but probably low rise jeans and Ugg boots.

Q.

Biggest pet peeve?

A.

Texting and driving – don’t do it!!!

Q.

If you could own a second home anywhere you wanted, where would it be?

A.

Upstate New York with no other houses in sight. Third home would be a beach shack in the Carolinas.

Q.

A book that everyone should read?

A.

I’m really into everything I’ve read by Carmen Maria Machado so far. I’m a sucker for short stories and creative non-fiction.
